Welcome from the Chair
Dear Beloved Community,
As we gather to commemorate the 160th Anniversary of the White Rock Baptist Church, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude. It is an honor to serve as the Chair of the 160th Church Anniversary Planning Committee and to reflect on the extraordinary legacy of this great religious institution—the first established for African Americans in our city, organized by a remarkable woman who was once an enslaved individual. This celebration is not merely a marker of time; rather, it serves as a powerful testament to our resilience, faith, and unity.
Founded in 1866, right after emancipation, White Rock Baptist Church became a beacon of hope and a pillar of strength for the African American community in Durham. Our church emerged from a necessity for spiritual guidance and social cohesion at a time when our people faced immense challenges. The vision of our founder, a female ex-slave, symbolizes the indomitable spirit of our ancestors who dared to dream of a better future, despite the oppressive circumstances that surrounded them.
Moreover, throughout its history, White Rock has been a trailblazer, playing a pivotal role in establishing vital Black-owned institutions in our community—political, economic, social, religious, educational, medical, and cultural. These institutions were essential in providing services and opportunities that were often denied to us, and our church has been a nurturing ground for leadership, empowerment, and community service, shaping the lives of countless individuals and families.
This year’s theme, “Planting in Faith, Growing in Grace, and Gathering the Harvest: Unity and Community,” invites us to reflect deeply on our journey as a community of faith. Each phrase encapsulates our shared experiences. As we look back, we remember those who planted the seeds of hope and faith that have grown into the vibrant community we are today. In addition, our evolution has been marked by grace, as we have navigated challenges and celebrated victories together. Today, we find ourselves reaping the fruits of our labor, unity, and commitment to serving one another and uplifting our community.
Furthermore, the scriptural foundation of our theme, drawn from Psalm 133:1, which speaks of the beauty of unity, and Galatians 6:9, which encourages us not to grow weary in doing good, resonates deeply as we reflect on our collective mission and purpose.
In light of this, we invite you to participate in the various celebratory activities planned throughout this momentous anniversary. Whether it’s through worship, fellowship, or community service, your involvement is crucial to honoring our past and shaping our future. If you feel called to assist with the planning or have ideas to contribute, please reach out to me or one of the co-chairs.
As we celebrate this milestone, let us remember that we are more than a church; we are a family, united in our faith and commitment to one another. Together, we will continue to plant seeds of hope, grow in grace, and gather the harvest of unity and community for generations to come.
With heartfelt blessings,
Deaconess Dr. Joyce Blackwell
